From 19. – 20. July the represantatives of the parties and NGOs belonging to the World Ecological Parties (WEP) gathered in Budapest. Particpants of the General Assembly came from the Zöld Pàrt (Hungary), the ödp (Germany), the Zelena Stranka (Serbia) and Oikologiki Paremvasi (Greece). Due to the strict visa regulations it was not possible for all members to take part in the Assembly. The visa requests of ASOL (Togo) for example had been turned down in spite of strong efforts from the part of ASOL and the WEP-board.
The representatives able to join the Assembly reported about the activities of their respective parties. The participants agreed, that the NGO „Grüne Brücke e.V.“ that shall be founded in Germany to facilitate projects and sponsoring of the WEP, shall be accepted automatically as partner of the WEP as of its official recognition.
The European representatives of the WEP will look for possibilities to found a Ecological Party of Europe to participate in the next elections for the European Parliament.
After these discussions the participants clarified organizational questions on the gathering of the WEP-board in Germany in November and elected the new WEP-board: President is Budimir Bubic, vice president Otto Steckler. Gergö Marton became new general secretary and Ulrike Brandhorst treasurer. Further members of the board are Goran Dimitrievski and Giorgos Chalkias as well as the former general secretary Ellen Eigemeier, who was not available for this function anymore due to her dissertation work and who we want to thank for her work in this place. Goran Dimitrievski became responsible for the organization of a WEPY-congress. Otto Steckler became responsible for the formation of an ecological party of Europe.
The next General Assembly shall be held in Togo, so that also the African members will be able to join this time. Therefore all members are asked to inform themselves about possibilities to travel to Togo (maybe all European members could travel together). The WEP members thank the representatives of ASOL for their offer to organize the gathering in Togo.
